Where’s the other one? Oppo has a thing with buying a pair of Golfs at a time.
Just kidding. Congratulations!!!!
(Seriously though, what’s with the “two E-Golfs when I just went to get one” thing?)

Superb choice. While Iove my GTI and it’s glorious plaid seats, I will always want an R.
To me, the R is simply without fault.

Well, it does fit in nicely with my Mk6 GTI...and my Mk2 GTI.

Thanks! I do love the plaid seats as well, and was adamantly against leather. Until I sat in the R.

Thanks! The refreshed Rs should be hitting dealers now; you should definitely go test drive one.

Those seats are indeed fab. My ‘lottery money’ car is actually a MK7 Golf R in grey, 6MT, and I would have the center section of the seats redone in the Euro e-Golf blue plaid fabric.

Are VW dealers lenient on test drives with Rs? I just may have to do that.

Anything worthwhile on the refresh? This has always been my consolidate the 2-car garage car, thinking maybe I do that sooner rather than later...

Congrats, I had a MK7 GTI. The EA888 is a gem of an engine. Lots of tuning potential. I had a good amount of mods on mine until I ended up selling it so I can buy my M2. Enjoy it!

When they first came out my dealer was a dick about it. But they were also asking 10k above sticker. I literally laughed in their face. When I came back a few months later they still had the same one, and three others. All of them had a 10k mark up. They don’t know how “supply and demand” works.

I’m coming from a pretty heavily modified MK6 GTI, so I’ve got a good path planned out for this one. Crazy what’s capable from 2 liters!
M2 was definitely a consideration for me, but I’m drawn to the Golfs.

I imagine it’s probably hit or miss dependent on dealers, but if you’re serious about shopping around for one you’ll likely find one that will let you take it for a spin.

It’s got some nicer quality-of-life improvements. But I’m vain, and I really prefer the ‘16s to the ‘18s aesthetically so it was never really something I researched much.

Nailed it. I’ve got some lightweight Neuspeed 5-spokes (in bronze) that I’m considering swapping over from the Mk6.

100% agree with you! Looks great and prices are solid, not many examples for sale on the used market. My wife and I plan to pick one up once we are forced to vacate sunny CA
I am sucker for a good blue

Hat tip from a GTI owner to you sir!
Mine is a MK7 GTI 6speed, Autobahn trim.
I’d throw a tune on it, but the stock clutch can’t handle the POWAR! And I don’t have two grand lying around to have someone install a stage 3 clutch. But they make good power with a tune and down pipe. I’m sure your R is ferocious.
I did just order some new BF Goodrich comp-2 A/S tires, so there’s that.

I think you’re probably good for a mild tune on the GTI; it uses the same clutch as the R as far as I know.
I went stage 2 on my Mk6 GTI and replaced the clutch shortly thereafter; and it was the best decision I made. Pulls like a freight train. The R feels slightly quicker than my GTI in a straight line, but sooo much quicker through corners. Super planted.
I plan on enjoying it for what it is until that clutch starts to show some signs of wear.

I pretty much had my mind made up for the past couple years that the R would be my next car. Didn’t test drive anything else. It’s probably a little short-sighted, but I feel like it’s the perfect vehicle for me so I got tunnel vision with it.

I’d say go in and if they’re dicks about it walk out and say call when you want to sell a car, but don’t leave your number.

Congrats!!
I’m eyeing Mk6 and Mk7 GTIs for my next daily. Probably toward the end of this year. Do you have any advice what to look for? Is a Mk7 definitely worth spending a few grand more?
Wudstock22

The Mk7 is definitely worth a few grand more due to the transition to the MQB platform and latest generation EA888.
You can also probably find some great deals on the GTIs, both new and used. Understand the trims and then narrow your search based on what you absolutely must have. I would definitely suggest the Lighting Package, and the Performance Pack offers (I believe) brakes from the R, and an electronic LSD. You can tell these cars at a glance due to the red inserts in the badging and the GTI stamped on the calipers.

Thanks for the input. I’m definitely leaning toward a Mk7. From the research I’ve done so far it sounds like the current generation EA888 is a lot less of a headache than the previous ones. That alone is enough to justify the additional cost I think.
I didn’t know that about the red inserts and GTI badged calipers. A nice easy way to pick out the performance pack cars. Not a must have for me, but it would be nice. Manual transmission and four doors are my only must haves.
